Seed Camp

Summer time is seed time. Join us as we wander in the gardens and harvest all that’s ripe. In the shaded seed house, we’ll process, clean and store the dried seeds for the next planting season. We’ll prepare the garden soil, sow and plant the first autumn crops, which will bear seeds in the coming year. There’ll also be a daily group time for you to get in touch with the foundational thoughts and different projects of Tamera.

“Every seed contains the potential to save the world. Each seed can keep millions of people from starvation. Each seed is a mirror and guardian of the world’s future. Each seed is the ecology that can sustain the economy. This is why seeds are sacred.”
His Holiness Bartholomew, Archbishop of Constantinople

Seed Saving – A Political Imperative

To cultivate one’s own seeds is an essential aspect for gaining autonomy and for growing healthy food and medicinal herbs. Increasingly restrictive laws prohibit farmers and gardeners from keeping natural seeds and make them dependent on the hybrid seeds of multinational corporations. This results in the extensive extinction of many varieties and causes immense social injustice. Therefore knowing about seed production is key for our survival and for building a peaceful culture of independent people.

Program Details

Our Seed Camp offers the possibility to get to know Tamera through practical work while gaining a basic knowledge of seed cultivation and processing. Each morning we’ll work in the seed garden. This means harvesting seeds, taking care of beds, preparing the autumn crop and planting the first seedlings.
In the afternoons you’ll meet with members of the community and hear about the basic thoughts of Tamera and different aspects of our project. There’ll also be space to share your experiences and get to know each other on a deeper level.
In the late afternoon (and on very hot mornings), we’ll process dried seeds in the shaded seed house. This process involves threshing by hand or foot, sieving by hand or with our antique mill, cleaning with water or wind, and sorting by hand.
Saturday afternoon and all of Sunday will be free. On Sunday you’re invited to be part of our matinee with the Tamera community.
