We have recognized that the financial and legal structures that carried Tamera through its pioneering years are no longer sufficient for the scale and responsibility of the work we now hold.

We are now facing a complex task. We actively orient towards creating an economy based on trust, caring for each other, and giving freely, while at the same time recognizing that we are inherently tied to a system in which land, buildings, legal needs, salaries, taxes, and daily life depend on a broader capitalist system in which money is necessary.

As we try to build a peace community in the heart of the global war economy, we face challenges. What does life beyond the capitalist agenda look like? How do we create a trust-based system, while continuing to interact with a fear-driven paradigm? How do we stay integral to our deep values, without falling into a trap of idealism? Holding all of this can feel impossible at times, and yet – we are willing to rise through the challenges again and again.. are saying yes to this task. Our next step is to find a coherent economic model that fully supports our community and our work in a way that feels integral. The creation of our new legal cooperative (in the next section) is one essential step in this endeavor. This will allow us to consolidate our organization so that we can share our insights, gifts, experiences, and learnings with the world from a stable foundation.

In addition to our change in legal structures, our current financial situation has made clear what we’ve known for a while and have heard again and again from friends and supporters: it’s time to rethink our economic foundation. 

We want to use this moment to make real, lasting changes. We need to give this topic time in order to move in a way that does not recreate the systems of oppression that currently dominate our world. We believe that the work and research we do here around this issue will become directly relevant to the greater collective.

In the coming months and years, step by step, we aim to create a new economic system that gives Tamera the stability it needs – and serves as inspiration for others who desire a similar change. All while staying true to our core values as a peace research center.

Right now, Tamera runs through three community-owned legal entities: AMH, ILOS, and GRACE. This setup developed over many years as the project grew and changed. It created our foundation in the early days, but over time it has become unnecessarily complicated, leading to more paperwork and less financial flexibility, while also making it harder to explain who we are and how we work.

Therefore, we are now in the final stages of establishing the ‘Cooperativa de Tamera’, a new legal entity designed to unite the project under one single entity. Over the coming years, we will transfer all our activities, assets, and responsibilities into this cooperative, creating a legal structure that more faithfully reflects the reality of Tamera as one community with one shared purpose.

This change is about more than just making things run smoothly. It’s about building a structure that everyone—members, supporters, partners, and public groups—can easily connect with. It will make money matters simpler, reduce paperwork, and help us get resources where they are needed most.

Just as important, the cooperative will make things much more transparent. We want to make our finances and community activities easier to understand, including both money and the many other ways people contribute. Eventually, we intend to share a clear summary of all this on our website, so everyone can see how Tamera works and how resources are used.

By spending less time on complicated paperwork, we can focus more on what matters most: peace research, restoring nature, education, and building community.

For over fifteen years, Tamera has worked incessantly with local authorities on a special plan for our long-term future. We are now close to getting final approval for our PIER (Plano de Intervenção em Espaço Rural)- the approval for a change in our land use. This will officially recognize our area as an Aglomerado Rural, meaning a rural settlement that reflects our real community, not just farmland. With this historic breakthrough, we can finally build permanent homes and shared spaces for the next stage of Tamera’s growth.

For almost thirty years, people have accepted to live here in very simple ways. Tents turned into caravans, and temporary shelters were slowly improved. Yet many Winters were spent in damp houses, and summers brought heat to spaces never meant to be permanent homes. These choices weren’t just about getting by—they showed our deep commitment to an experiment that many felt was worth their lives.

Their perseverance has made this moment possible.

This breakthrough is about so much more than just building houses. It’s about bringing to life the culture we’ve been growing for decades. The way we design our living spaces affects how we meet, care for each other, learn, celebrate, and solve problems. With well-designed homes, shared spaces, classrooms, workshops, and places for guests, we can start exploring new ways to live together in peace.

For us, this is the start of a new chapter. After years of building our social, ecological, and cultural foundations, we are finally close to seeing our village become a true reflection of everything we’ve worked for.
