Joining Tamera: 3-Year Program of Education and Engagement

Like any community, Tamera can only continue to thrive by inviting and integrating new members. After more than ten years with no permission to build and not welcoming new co-workers, Tamera is preparing to enter a new phase of growth as a peace research village aligned with our vision.   Therefore, we invite people who are ready to embark on a common path where inner growth and collective action come together in service of peace, and the needs of Tamera.

Over the past three decades, Tamera has been shaped by inspiring achievements as well as deep challenges. As we open our doors again, we invite committed people to join us in navigating the next steps with transparency, courage and readiness for change. To join Tamera means embracing a profound life transformation: dedicating yourself to building a model for a peace culture embedded in a global network.

We will soon be in the regional masterplan with an official zoning change that will hopefully enable us to design and build a communitarian village in the Portuguese countryside, planning communitarian housing and updating existing buildings. Together with this exciting development, we are inviting new members to join the Tamera community through a three-year educational accompaniment program, beginning in Spring 2026.

3-Year Time Line

The 3-year program is designed to accompany, prepare and integrate new members through a gradual, step-by-step process:

  • May–November 2026 – The first year is dedicated to laying the foundations and will include at least 3 intensive times to dive deeper into communitarian living (Starting with a community course). Participants will receive regular group accompaniment with 3-5 meetings per week, including: Forum work, studying the Healing Biotopes vision, Portuguese lessons, as well as occasional opportunities to join Tamera’s intimate community spaces, such as the General Assembly, Plenary, Community Forums and internal courses.
  • August 2026 –  One month Summer break. It’s a month for participants to have a “time out” from Tamera. To earn money or just to have some breathing room.
  • November 2026First threshold: evaluation by both participant and community to decide on a commitment for the second year.
  • April -November 2027 – Continuing to deepen the communitarian experience for the second year of the program.
  • November 2027Second threshold: evaluation for a commitment to the third year.
  • Winter 2027-2028 – Your first winter living in Tamera, sharing daily life and participating in intensive group processes.
  • April 2028 – April 2029 – Third year, including the winter in Tamera with further intensive community time.
  • April 2029Third and Final threshold: evaluation to become a permanent co-worker in Tamera.

We welcome applicants of all ages, nationalities, races, genders, and sexual identities, with an especially warm invitation to Portuguese citizens and people of color.

The history of Tamera began among a group of friends in Germany in the 1970s, who shared a common language, culture, and socio-ecomonic background. Their vision was always to be a globallly relevant community, welcoming to everyone. However, the process of becoming aware of this homogeneity, and how it feels to people from other backgrounds, has been a challenging process, which is still on-going. Tamera’s members are still mostly white and European, with many German-language speakers and only a few Portuguese co-workers. Similarly, most–but not all!–community members are cis-gendered and identify as straight. We are in an active process to make Tamera a safer space for all people, and things are changing. But the truth is that encountering Tamera in our unfinished process can still impact BIPOC, queer, and nonbinary people. To get a feeling for our current status please read our inclusion statement.

We are particularly looking for people aged 20–40, who are independent, motivated, and bring skills and commitment in fields such as: ecological regeneration, fundraising, renewable energy, education (school teachers), medical professionals, building and maintenance, finances and administration, information technology, marketing and communication.

Tamera is a research center for cultural change. This program will, of course, include the deeply transformative, politically relevant, and often provocative theme of Healing of Love!

Whether or not you know Tamera well — in both its aspiration and its imperfection — if you feel called to dedicate your life to inner and outer peace work and you are willing to put yourself into service for the creation of a regenerative culture, we warmly invite you to apply and take part in this transformative journey.

Note: If you have resonance but feel concerned about the timeline and your availability, please apply and reach out to us anyway, we are happy to engage in a dialog.
