Work Study in our Kitchen

Between mid-April and mid-November 2023, we invite people interested in preparing vegan food who want to learn about community building and who want to explore an emerging new culture. We invite you to study the ideas of Tamera, while living in community with other guests and cooking for the guest center.

This program is offered to people who would like to stay in Tamera for a longer period of time and go into their own experience in creating community. Tamera provides as much structure as it can in order for guests to do a community living experiment where they research their own life questions regarding political & spiritual topics, sexuality, love, partnership, ecoliving and more.
Our kitchen team holds an important social position in our guest center, mainly because they are in Tamera for longer periods of time and create a base for those people coming for shorter seminars.

Our cuisine is mostly regional, seasonal and vegan. This is an expression of our decision to step away from the systems of exploitation, centralization and industrialized food production and move toward systems of cooperation. This allows us to have a direct influence on how food is produced and processed. We believe that healthy nutrition plays a key role in creating a healthy system of life.

Program Details

This program consists of 4-5 hours of hands-on work each day (5-6 days a week) and regular group meetings (at least 3 times a week). In addition to learning basic skills about nutrition and food processing, we will share our decades-long research findings on community building, and we will co-create spaces where community awareness can be learned. Working in a communal kitchen touches social questions of community building that we will address consciously together.

You’ll work in our guest center kitchen in a team with other guests and will be accompanied by various community members. Along with a team, you’ll cook for an average of 70 people per meal. We’re looking for people who bring joy, curiosity and commitment. Previous cooking experience isn’t necessary.

You’ll explore:

  • what is a “Healing Biotope
  • examining, questioning, and researching our findings from the past 45 years in community building, sexuality, love, partnership, spirituality, art, healing, cooperation with all beings, raising children, ecosystem restoration, regenerative autonomy and economy
  • working in a team that you also live in a community with! (no more passive aggressive notes for your roommates who don’t do their dishes, we’re going to talk and process together!)
  • studying questions like “how can i cook dinner for 70 people with someone who is in love with my crush?!!”

Components:

  • cooking and preparing vegan food
  • team meetings to consciously address communal and individual needs
  • group times consisting of presentations and Q&A sessions with different community members, guided tours, facilitated spaces practicing social tools such as Forum and Council in order to go deeper into your life questions
  • participating in events for the whole community, e.g. our Sunday matinee, the Ring of Power and Political Cafes

Dates:

  • April 10 to June 21
  • June 19 to September 4
  • September 1 to November 12

Each term is around 10 weeks long. At a minimum, you must participate for 5 weeks. Preference is given to people who can participate for the entire term, as this consistency adds significantly to the integrity of this community experiment.
